The Land Report lists Bill Gates as America's largest private farmland owner, with 242,000 acres of farmland spread across roughly 20 states. Its broader 2026 ranking puts his total land holdings at 275,000 acres and ranks him 44th among private U.S. landowners overall.
The USDA counted 873.95 million acres of American farmland in 2025. Gates's farmland works out to about 0.028 percent of that total. Enormous for one guy; approximately 99.97 percent short of owning American agriculture.
Gates says the purchases were made by his professional investment team, with the aim of making farms more productive and creating jobs — not as part of a grand scheme. The Land Report says Cascade Investment treats farmland as diversification for his tech-heavy portfolio. Neither explanation makes 242,000 acres normal. Both make “Bill Gates owns the food supply” engagement fan fiction.
Enough dirt to be legitimately weird. Not enough to repossess corn.
